At least over 50 people are reportedly dead following a fuel tanker explosion in Morogorom, 200 kilometers west of Tanzania's capital Dar es Salaam, Reuters reported.
The explosion occurred around 200 km west of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
“We have been saddened by reports of an accident involving a fuel truck in Morogoro, which caught fire and burned several people,” government spokesman Hassan Abbasi said on Twitter.
The report indicates majority of the victims killed are motorcyclists who rushed to the scene to collect the oil gushing onto the road, according to eye witnesses.
Reports suggest a cigarette was to blame for the deadly fire.
Fire fighters from Tanzania People’s Defense Force (TPDF) and Fire Brigade have been deployed for rescue mission.
