FOOTBALL WORLD MOURNS SALA
BODY OF DROWNED FOOTBALLER EMILIANO SALA IDENTIFIED, PILOT STILL MISSING.
Authorities have formally identified the body found inside the plane wreckage as that of Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala. The wreckage of the plane was located earlier this week in the English Channel by a privately funded recovery team hired by Sala’s family after similar official operations were called off.
British police said on Thursday, February 7th that the single body retrieved from the wreckage had been formally identified as Sala. “The families of Argentinian footballer Sala and the pilot David Ibbotson have been updated with this news and will continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time,” a police statement said.
The light aircraft which carried Sala and his pilot, David Ibbotson, crashed more than two weeks ago as they were flying from Nantes in France to Cardiff in Wales. The Search is still ongoing for Mr. Ibbotson, the only other occupant on board the plane.
Leader of the rescue crew, Mr. David Mearns that located Sala’s aircraft, posted a message on Twitter following the identification commemorating the football player. “Rest in Peace Emiliano. I was glad to provide some small comfort to Romina, Mercedes and the whole Sala family during the past two weeks but my heart goes out to the family and friends of David Ibbotson whose loss is the same,” Mr. Mearns said.
