BRITAIN’S DIPLOMATIC CHANGE IN KENYA

Ms. Marriot an Anti-Terrorism Expert to Become the First British Female High-Commissioner in Kenya

Britain has appointed Ms. Jane Marriot as its first ever female High Commissioner to Kenya.  An Anti-terrorism expert, Ms. Marriot will take office at beginning September 2019 when she replaces Mr. Nic Hailey, who has been serving in Nairobi since 2015.

A career diplomat, Ms. Marriott started her work at Foreign and Commonwealth office in 2001 after serving in the British Cabinet and Home Offices. She later served in various capacities in Kabul (Afghanistan), Al-Amar (Iraq), and Baghdad as an advisor to the coalition forces combating terrorism.

The 43 year old lady is currently the director of the Joint International Counter-Terrorism Unit and has served as her country’s joint FCO Director for the Middle East and North Africa. She has further served as the Ambassador to Sana’a, Yemen from 2013 to 2015 and as the Deputy and Acting Ambassador to Iran.

“Marriott brings a wealth of experience to the position, having worked across many UK Government Departments including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Cabinet Office, the Home Office and the Ministry of Defence,” a statement from the High Commission stated.

The current diplomat announced his planned departure from Kenya on June 6, during an honor ceremony event to mark the 93rd birthday of Queen Elizabeth, held at his official residence in Nairobi.
