Addis Ababa based African Union has nominated Kenya for the UN security council seat after it defeated Djibouti with 37 votes against 13.

The Voting process that saw Kenya and Djibouti go for the second round at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is somewhat disappointing considering the Country Kenya was Competing against, Low level Country.

Its Kenya Kenya diplomatic weight is not being felt in the Region. We can clearly state that if Kenya was competing with any Country in the EAC Region or SADC they could have been defeated.

In round one Kenya got 34 Djibouti 15, with 2 abstentions.

With the Africa Union backing therefore means Kenya becomes Africa’s sole candidate for the race to win the non-permanent seat for 2021-2022.

Kenya the Largest Economy in Africa, which has campaigned for the seat globally had initially, won the vote on August 5, beating Djibouti with 33 votes with 16 abstentions.

With this endorsement from the AU, it injects renewed Moral to Kenyan to campaign now more vigorously for a seat they declared interest in 2018 to now campaign for it across the globe.

Dr Monica Juma, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary said the vote was a show of confidence for Kenya to represent Africa’s agenda at the UNSC.

This endorsement is an affirmation that Kenya has remained true to the decisions and aspirations of the African Union and confirms that it is a safe and dependable pair of hands,” Dr Juma said in a statement on Wednesday.

Kenya commits to the African brothers and sisters, that we shall be a bold voice for Africa and shall be steadfastly promote and defend the African position.” Dr. Monica Juma added.
